Sprouts Farmers Market

Sustainability Intern

May 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

- Lots of opportunity to initiate on projects that I'm passionate about - Learned SO much about what it's like to be on a corporate sustainability team - Discovered interests that I didn't know I had in sustainable sourcing, corporate law, and zero waste

What I wish was different

- Wish I had more structure and more training - Wish expectations had been clearer

Advice

Internships/jobs might seem ambiguous and overwhelming when you first start. Give it time, keep your mind and eyes open to new learning experiences, and trust that you will find a groove over time and be able to start making waves.

Head Cashier

March 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ

What I liked

The hours are flexible with your school schedule and they're really willing to work with you. There's a big sense of community at Sprouts and it's easier to make friends and meet people that you actually enjoy working with.

What I wish was different

Sprouts offers competitive pay which means your experience when you come in determines your pay. This makes it really hard to get a raise even if you move up in your department.

Advice

If you decide to work during school, you need to understand that this is a commitment and not just an extra way to make money. You need to be dedicated and show up when you're scheduled. Otherwise, not showing up could lead to termination and that will follow you the rest of your life. Also, don't be afraid to try and work your way up. It IS possible. There is a lot of opportunity for growth at Sprouts. I was hired as a bagger and got all the way up to head cashier in about a year.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people at my job and the environment.

What I wish was different

The thing I wish I've done differently is kept working on weekends.

Advice

I really enjoyed all the healthy food that this market sell, and gave me something to think about if I wanted to start eating health.

Cashier

June - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Flexible scheduling, lots of opportunities for extra hours, good insurance (not that I was there long enough to make use of it), friendly co-workers and managers, and a 15% employee discount for yourself and one of your family members.

What I wish was different

Nothing, really. If you don't mind standing in one spot for a while and making small talk with a bunch of people, this is a great job for you (assuming you don't want/need something higher than minimum wage).

Advice

Get some comfy, padded shoes, like running shoes. You'll appreciate having them after you finish standing in one spot for 5-8 hours, believe me.
