Building Inspector
The city of New Orleans dept. of Safety and Permits is looking for a Building Inspector to join our dedicated team! As a City Building Inspector, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with local building codes and regulations within the jurisdiction of the city government. Working closely with construction professionals, property owners, and other stakeholders, you will conduct inspections to verify that construction projects adhere to safety and quality standards. Your role will be crucial in promoting public safety and contributing to the overall development of the city
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial structures at various construction stages to ensure compliance with city building codes and regulations
- Interpret and enforce local building codes, zoning laws, and regulations applicable within the city.
- Provide guidance to builders, architects, and property owners on compliance requirements and necessary corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of inspections, violations, and corrective measures taken.
- Prepare clear and concise inspection reports, documenting findings and any necessary follow-up actions.
- Collaborate with city planning departments, engineers, and other city officials to address compliance issues and ensure effective communication between departments.
- Interact with the public, contractors, and property owners, providing information and assistance related to building codes, permitting processes, and inspection procedures
Requirements:
- A High School Diploma or GED issued by a state Department of Education.
- EITHER: Two (2) years (60 semester hours) of university or trade school training in an architecture, engineering, or construction technology curriculum from an accredited college or university* and one (1) year of full-time experience in architecture or building construction involving inspection, drafting, designing or building. Additional experience may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.
OR:A Bachelor's Degree in architecture, engineering, historic preservation, or construction technology from an accredited college or university.
OR: A Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university* and an active certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Building Inspector.*
Note:If appointed, employee must be certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Residential Building Inspector during the probationary period.
