Qualifications/Education Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting preferred. Three (3) or more years of accounting experience preferred. Experience in nonprofit, government, housing development, or grant-funded projects is a plus.

OR

  • A minimum of an associate’s degree in accounting with 4+ years of accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit, government, or housing development or grant-funded projects.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks or similar).
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables and financial modeling.
  • Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Outlook.
  • Must demonstrate proficient computer skills (40 wpm).
  • Knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant compliance.

Other Requirements

  • Must have a negative TB screening within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.

Job/Task Functions

The Project Accountant is responsible for managing financial activities related to specific projects, including housing developments, grants, and program funding for Community Assisted and Supported Living, Inc. (CASL). This role ensures accurate tracking, reporting, and compliance of financial transactions associated with CASL’s permanent supportive housing initiatives.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Project Accountant will work closely with the Director of Building and Community Development, project managers, program staff, and external funding agencies to provide financial oversight and support for CASL’s housing projects, grants, and regular activities.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of accounting and job cost analyses.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate financial records for various projects, grants, and other initiatives, ensuring compliance with contract terms.
  • Track budget-to-actual expenses for assigned projects and programs. Identity and report variances.
  • Prepare journal entries and maintain the general ledger.
  • Assist with GL reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports on project activities for grantors and internal staff.
  • Allocate costs appropriately across projects, funding sources, and departments.
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure grant expenditure aligns with approved budgets.
  • Prepare and submit payment requests/draws with support documentation to funders.
  • Monitor and follow up on project-related accounts receivable, including government subsidies and funding reimbursements.
  • Assist in developing project budgets, collaborating with project managers and leadership.
  • Prepare financial documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Ensure compliance with HUD, GAAP, and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records for financial reporting purposes.
  • Assist the CFO and the Director of Building and Community Development with other projects and other tasks as assigned.
  • Must maintain appropriate boundaries in the workplace and to work professionally (ethically), especially regarding confidentiality.
  • Check company email while on duty, responding timely, appropriately, and professionally, to communicate internally and externally.
  • Interact professionally with residents, co-workers, community partners, and vendors. Must be able to maintain tact and professionalism.
