Extended Day Instructor

Extended Day Instructor- Markham Elementary

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: SUN stands for Schools Uniting Neighborhoods. SUN Community Schools are school-based delivery sites for a comprehensive set of services including educational, enrichment, recreational, social and health services. It is a school serving as a support hub, with schools and communities working together to support the success of children and families and provide a comprehensive array of services. They serve as the vehicle to link community organizations such as libraries, parks, social services, area churches and businesses with students and families.

JOB SUMMARY: The Extended Day Instructor will work with the SUN Site Supervisor and Extended Day Coordinator to provide enrichment classes and activities after school. Markham Elementary is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated instructors for temporary assignments at Markham Elementary School. This position is for the 2025-2026 school year. Fall term runs October 6, 2025 through December 19, 2025. Hours are Monday through Thursday 2:15 PM - 5:00 PM.The assignment begins on the first day of the term and ends on the last day, with the possibility of extending the role into future terms (summer, fall, winter, spring) by mutual agreement.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach after-school activity classes
  • Supervise groups of 10-15 children, ages 5-11.
  • Track and ensure academic and social emotional development of students.
  • Act as a positive role-model for students.
  • Participate and implement support program safety to ensure students are in a safe environment.
  • Develop curriculum for activity classes.
    • It is important to us that our staff LOVE the subjects they are teaching. We offer a variety of classes from each STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) field as well as movement-based classes like soccer or dance. We are open to almost anything! Please indicate your interests so we can plan appropriately.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and training that would likely meet the following requirements

  • Experience providing academic and recreational activities to students after school.
  • Experience working with school-aged children from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Specific area of expertise that you are passionate about and eager to share with students, such as (but not limited to): art, kid's cooking, dance, creative writing, environmental science, foreign language, team sports, disc golf, etc.
  • Ability to provide children with an enriching, positive, and safe classroom setting.
  • Possess strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures.
  • Must be able to complete and pass an Oregon Background check including fingerprinting prior to start date.

THIS JOB ALSO REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Repetitive motion, prolonged sitting, and extensive visual involvement
  • Ability to efficiently travel in order to perform duties and other agency related errands
  • Moderate lifting
