Job Title: Adolescent English and Theory of Knowledge Guide - Long Term Substitute
Level: Upper Adolescent, 10-12
Classification: 1.0 FTE, exempt regular salaried employee - (Salary DOE)
Compensation: Commensurate with experience and education
Licensure: Licensed in English Language Art 6-12
Reports to: Adolescent Instructional Program Director
School Year: Semester 1: 25-26 School Year, August 18, 2025 - January 23rd, 2026 (possibility to continue in Semester 2)

General Description:
This position provides instruction in the Literature for students in grades 9-12 - with specific duties including
- IB Literature for 12th year students
- Theory of Knowledge for 11th-12th year students
- Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) *Montessori support activities

Essential Responsibilities Include:
- Understand developmental tendencies of the adolescent student, implement student centered and inquiry based learning opportunities and curriculum writing, and systematic best practices in humanities teaching with a diverse perspective
- Teaches English and Theory of Knowledge courses to adolescent students
- Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects using formal and informal assessment data obtained from students.
- Uses a variety of culturally relevant practices to support content standards and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Creates a classroom environment and research-based program of study that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required school guidelines.
- Implements all policies and rules governing student life and conduct both in the school and on field trips.
- Serves as an advisor to an advisor to 10-12th grade students, including overseeing and supporting students in experiential learning and reflection and participating parent conferences and telephone conferences
- Interest and willingness to attend and participate in Fall key experiences, a camping trip and experiential learning with students.
- Participates in Wednesday “CAS” activities: Plans and leads experiences for students, or guides independent student projects.
Essential Community Responsibilities:
- Participates in the Fall Key Experiences, attending a 4-5 day overnight trip with students
- Participates in the Spring Key Experiences, attending either the ⅞ bike trip or leading a 9-12th grade Spring Intensive in the last week of school.
- Leads Creativity, Activity, or Service Activities on Wednesday afternoons.
- Leads an advisory of students, building relationships, conducting community building activities, provides additional academic support and acts as another trusted adult for their advisory student.
Qualifications:
- Valid Minnesota Teaching License, English-Language Arts 6-12
- Licensure and/or experience in Humanities, Literature, ELA, Social Studies instruction
- Specifically interested in Montessori
- Student Centered Learning
- Culturally Relevant instruction
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with students individually and in small groups
- Montessori experience
- Experience with standards-based grading
- Understanding of Anti-Racist and Anti Biased knowledge, practices, and competencies
- Desire to be part of a team of professional educators who collaborate and create an environment that serves students holistically
