On-Ice Pay: $15.922 - $31.293 per hour, DOQ
Off-Ice Pay: $13.726 per hour

Organize and lead Learn to Skate classes year-round, from tots to adults, basic skills to advanced freestyle – be a part of exciting events like exhibitions, competitions, and our annual spring ice show.


Scheduled hours are typically 0-8 hours per week depending on class times offered each session.

Essential Position Functions

In these positions you will:
 

  • Organize lead, and teach basic ice-skating skills, figure skating skills, and/or hockey skating skills for the appropriate classes with an emphasis on safety and fun.
  • Communicate effectively with groups of skaters ages 3 to adult.
  • Help set-up for classes as well as clean-up after classes.
  • Assist with exhibitions, competitions, birthday parties, summer camp and special events, as well as help with choreography and the running of the annual spring ice show.
  • Assess and test skaters; track and complete performance evaluations as needed.
  • Monitor Skate Eagan sessions by assisting skaters with skating, enforcing rules of the session and instructing introductory sessions.
  • Attend annual in-house training sessions for continued education and training as well as mandatory Instructor meetings.
  • Stay up to date with current LTS USA curriculum, instructor practices and compliance.
  • Participates in Learn to Skate USA training annually.
  • Available to instruct classes throughout the year on a regular basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 16 years or age or older.
  • Ability to skate proficiently with a background in figure skating or hockey.
  • Knowledge of various teaching methodology and guidelines for ice skating such as ISI, USFS programs or USA Hockey.
  • Current professional member/ability to become a professional member of Learn to Skate USA prior to employment and ability to maintain this membership throughout employment.
  • Currently carry or will obtain proper liability insurance if conducting private lessons.
  • Ability to perform all essential position functions under the working conditions described.
  • Must be available at least once per week for Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions; more availability and flexibility through our busy sessions is highly preferred.
  • Must be available to cover Skate Eagan sessions year-round. Usually 2-4/month.
  • Complete Heads-Up online course, every other year.

Things that may help you be successful in this role

  • Knowledge or experience with the organization and supervision of skating school classes.
  • Experience participating in ice shows.
  • Experience working with children ages 3 and above, children with special needs, and adults.
  • Familiarity with the Learn to Skate USA program and its guidelines.


Knowledge of:

  • Various ice-skating techniques and skills.
  • Safety protocols and the ability to enforce safety rules.
  • Skating assessment and evaluation.

Skills in:

  • Communication, both written and oral.
  • Organization and time management.
  • Interpersonal skills, working well with others creating a positive, motivating, and safe environment.

Ability to:

  • Skate proficiently and demonstrate skating techniques.
  • Engage and work effectively with co-workers, children, and adults of various needs and abilities.
  • Problem solve to identify challenges or issues that arise.

 
 Supervision

  • Indirect supervision of volunteer instructor assistants.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform and demonstrate skating techniques such as jumps, spins, and other maneuvers to instruct students of various levels.
  • Ability to remain on ice for extended periods, typically ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours per session.
  • Ability to skate, stand, walk, crouch, bend, kneel, and move on the ice for the duration of lessons or sessions without fatigue.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs and providing physical support to skaters.
  • Ability to hear, speak, and observe.


Working Conditions

  • Working conditions: 80% on-ice, 20% off ice.
  • Must be able to work in a cold environment (ice rink) with temperatures ranging from 30°F to 70°F, for extended periods of time.
  • This is a part-time recurring position (year-round), non-exempt, non-union, not benefit eligible.
  • Scheduled hours are typically 0-8 hours on ice per week depending on class times offered each session and registration numbers, and 0-4 hours off ice per week as needed.
  • Must be available once per week (minimum) for Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions; additional availability and flexibility is highly preferred.
  • Must be available to cover Skate Eagan sessions. Usually 2-4/month.
