  POSITION TITLE: Accountant
Exempt
DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Director of Finance
SITE: District Office 
Contracted Length Term: 12 months; 252-day work calendar
Salary: District Office; Accountant (range $78,537 - $98,248 based on experience)
Start Date: To be determined upon hire
 
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Provides accurate and timely recording and reporting of District financial information in compliance with GAAP, Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and the Colorado Dept. of Education Financial Policies and Procedures; performs internal audits of school activity funds;  prepares external audit workpapers; assists in the preparation of the annual budget and on-going monitoring; manages financial transactions and reconciliations of the Employee Medical, Capital Projects, Charter School and Special Revenue Funds; identifies system improvements; resolves problems; and performs other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform a variety of financial record keeping functions related to District's accounting and budget control operations.
  • Review, monitor and audit accounting and budget records of the various District funds, including revenue, encumbrances, invoices, current liabilities, cost trans­fers, budget transfers and related transactions.
  • Compile, verify and prepare accounts and budgets related to food service, employee medical, student activities, capital projects, and other related funds.
  • Prepare budget projections, amendments and monitoring of assigned funds and preparation of annual budget schedules and documents.
  • Prepare various monthly bank reconciliations, cash flow reports, and quarterly financial reports for the School Board.
  • Arrange, post, and balance financial data, prepare trial balance and financial statements. Maintain journals, ledgers, and other accounting records.
  • Create, process and post journal entries after analyzing and reconciling revenue, expenditure and balance sheet accounts.
  • Perform technical accounting tasks related to the preparation and management of accounting records and reports, such as, revenue, food service, employee medical, capital projects, charter school, purchasing, accounts payable, and payroll.
  • Prepare schedules for the annual audit, including Fixed Asset and Depreciation schedules and other various reports and year-end financial statement reconciliation.
  • Prepare account and fund analysis with a variety of statist­ical and research data gathering activities.
  • Assist in budgeting and managing billing of Medicaid funds.
  • Prepare and record weekly deposits for all funds and coordinate third party billing.
  • Support revenue deposits and accounts receivable billing to school activity accounts.
  • Cross train to support other positions in the Finance Department such as accounts payable and Controller positions.
  • Assist with other Finance Department related assignments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: Principles and methods of accounting, budget planning and control, fund financial statements, technical report preparation, and internal/external audits processes; financial record keeping methods, procedures, and techniques; Colorado Dept. of Education legal mandates, practices, and procedures; accounting and budget control computer-based record management systems; organization, management and employee motivation strategies and techniques.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze, compile, interpret and effectively communicate accounting, payroll, and budget control policies, regulations, and guidelines; prepare clear and accurate financial statements and reports with attention to detail and high level of accuracy; complete audit workpapers; project and track fund budgets with the ability to think strategically and take ownership of assigned funds with minimal supervision; perform complex and technical financial record keeping functions with strong problem solving and analytical skills; understand and carry out verbal and written directions; establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with effective time management and organizational skills.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: Baccalaureate degree in accounting or related field is preferred, supplemented by training or coursework in budget planning and control, business administration, fund accounting, or closely related fields. CPA or other applicable accounting credentials preferred.

Experience: Four years of accounting experience in governmental/school district or auditing preferred. Excel - Advanced knowledge

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

License Requirement
