About the Role
Coordinate and oversee activities of the surgical service department and team members to ensure compassionate, effective and efficient delivery of high quality clinical care for patients within the Peri-operative environment.
Core Responsibilities
1. Coordinates daily scheduling and staffing, assuring the patient care delivered supports the mission and values of CMC.
- Plans and coordinates appropriate staffing practices by maximizing the utilization of resources across the organization
- Forecasts and anticipates the personnel needs of assigned departments with regard to fluctuations in the patient workload
- Maintains staffing at levels determined by the flexible staffing plan and may coordinate the daily assignments of staff, including daily assignment of staff to promote proficient clinical application in all areas
- Creates an environment where personnel can realize personal growth through active participation in organizational decisions, opportunities for professional growth, and consistent application of personnel policies
- Assist with interviewing potential staff
- Assists with new employee orientation/training
- Evaluate performance of clinical team members and conduct verbal and written performance evaluations after 180 days and annually
- Ensures staff fulfill routine duties, such as restocking, cleaning, checking documentation, checking supplies for outdates, etc.
- Assists CNO with implementation, review, and revision of policies and procedures
- Monitors and ensures compliance with State and Federal regulatory standards
- Maintains competency in all organizational, department, and outside safety standards relevant to job performance
- Maintains and displays appropriate level of clinical expertise
- Serves as resource to physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and families.
- Serves as a resource to employees for technology, policies and procedures, and clinical competence
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and maintains flexibility to adapt to a variety of situations triggered by sudden fluctuations in volume; triages unscheduled patients and coordinates immediate projected staffing requirements
2. Assesses the needs of the patient population, plans for those needs, intervenes based on the assessment and planning process and evaluates the outcomes and applies the clinical discipline of professional nursing through the nursing process.
- Ensures quality of patient care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following CMC’s philosophies and standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing body regulation
- The Manager sets priorities for nursing care based on the care plan and delivers care in a timely manner
- Is flexible and creative in identifying resources to meet patient/family needs
- Communicates pertinent changes in patient conditions to the CNO in a timely manner
- The Manager collaborates with the clinical nursing staff and other clinical disciplines to evaluate the patient response to the care plan and nursing intervention
- Maintains knowledge of the resources available in the community for patients/families and assists staff with referrals.
- Assists patients and families in their decision-making. Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach
- Identifies appropriate patients for care management planning based on patient needs and risk factors and reports to supervisor
- Assists with identifying, reporting and correcting high risk situations
- Demonstrates the ability to use critical thinking skills as a leader at CMC
- Effectively demonstrates the ability to delegate appropriately as guided by policy and Idaho Board of Nursing
- Assists with maintaining a network of the services and disciplines required by individual patients receiving care management services
- Establishes and maintains methods for tracking patient's progress through the health care system.
- The Manager interacts effectively with physicians as an advocate of patient care
- Facilitates transfers within levels of care at CMC as well as transfers to receiving facilities
- Collaborates closely with care providers in discharge planning goals
- May function in the role of a staff nurse in the event of necessary staff breaks, high patient acuity, excessive staff call-offs, etc.
- Serve as a Super-User for facilities E.H.R system and maintains knowledge of E.H.R and practice management systems including E-Scribe
3. Manager performs technical tasks and procedures safely and accurately
- The Manager successfully completed the performance standards inclusive of the yearly competencies for the primary area
- Follows all national and facility standards for safe medication administration and security using resources available and critical thinking skills
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
4. Accountability
- May be scheduled a combination of days/evening/night shifts as deemed appropriate by the CNO
- The Manager has been delegated 24-hour responsibly for the unit assigned. The Manager provides assistance to staff which includes being available by telephone 24/7.
- Attends meetings designated by the CNO and reports to the CNO on those meetings
- Reports pertinent changes to the CNO
5. Assists with the organization of ongoing communication among all health care providers and staff. Develops collaborative relationships to enhance quality of service.
- Participates in the development of, and assists, with implementation of an education plan that addresses individual and unit/service needs
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Promotes positive work environment
- Utilizes performance improvement principals to assess and improve the quality of patient care.
- Identifies needs and sets goals for own professional growth and development. Meets all mandatory departmental education requirements
- Listens openly to ideas presented by others and communicates those to the CNO.

7. Resource Management
- Develop operating budget using variance analysis, performance experience of prior years, and predictors for change.
- Implement agreed upon strategies to meet budget and/or productivity targets for cost effective quality care.
- Analyze financial information on a monthly basis, complete exception reports with appropriate recommendations, and submit report in a timely manner.
- Promote cost-effective behavior in employees through observation, coaching and mentoring.
- Participate in the development of annual unit goals and objectives.
8. Respects patient's rights to privacy and dignity.
- Observes all aspects of HIPPA in protecting patient/resident information and reports concerns for breeches
- Champions projects related to patient environmental concerns and needs
- Shows awareness of current patient satisfaction rating for the organization and is engaged in improvement projects

Qualifications/Education/Experience needed for position including certifications
Required
1. Valid License as an RN in the State of Idaho or eligible for licensure in Idaho.
2. ACLS, PALS, BLS, NRP must be maintained throughout employment.
3. At least five years of clinical surgical services experience.
4. Knowledge of patient care standards and management practices in a healthcare environment.
Preferred
1. CNOR certification desired.
2. Prior management experience of comprehensive surgical services and/or management of an ambulatory clinical setting.
3. Experience with robotic procedures
Work Environment: This job operates in a hospital setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations throughout the hospital. This role may come in contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. There may be risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, latex, and odors/chemicals.
