Associate editor of SIAM News
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) seeks a talented, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual for the position of associate editor of SIAM News, SIAM’s member news journal that publishes 10 times/year, and the associated blog. This position is full-time and works at SIAM’s office in Philadelphia, Pa., at least twice a week.
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the managing editor, the associate editor assists in the production of print SIAM News issues, from receipt of initial copy through the final approval of each issue. They are also responsible for overseeing SIAM News Online, from the solicitation and editing of blog content to the upload and publication of finalized pieces.
The associate editor edits and proofreads all articles for both print and online publication, helping the managing editor with author correspondence and feedback. They format approved copy for print via Adobe InDesign, generating galley proofs of each article for final review before creating an editorial layout for the entire issue. They may also write copy for the table of contents and create/edit graphics via Photoshop on an as-needed basis. Upon completion of the layout, the associate editor works with the managing editor to copyedit the issue.
Additionally, the associate editor helps to maintain a spreadsheet of all present and forthcoming content for SIAM News and SIAM News Online. Along with the managing editor, they solicit content and communicate with authors about edited drafts, proofs, and final manuscripts.
The associate editor uploads and posts both print and blog articles to SIAM News Online, manages many aspects of the website, and crafts social media posts to promote articles. They write content for the website in the form of short articles that detail recent research from SIAM journals, happenings at SIAM conferences, and other relevant initiatives.
Finally, the associate editor travels two to three times a year to SIAM conferences and events, where they write articles about presentations and recruit authors for SIAM News.
Experience and Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in English/journalism/communications and/or mathematics, physics, or a related field with science communication experience is required. Experience with editing, proofreading, and writing technical and scientific articles is highly preferred, as the position focuses on effective scientific communication. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office is essential and knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite—particularly InDesign and Photoshop—is preferred. Experience with LaTeX and mathematical software such as MathType and MathJax is beneficial but not required. Demonstrated ability to use content management systems such as Umbraco to upload and format web content is expected, along with basic familiarity with social media platforms. Excellent writing, communication, editing, and organizational skills are a must, as is strong attention to detail and effective time management.
