Adapted Recreation Coach

Join the Stevens Point Area YMCA as an Adapted Recreation Coach and help empower individuals of all abilities through sports, recreation, and skill-building. Our Adapted Recreation Coaches support programs aligned with our “everyone is a winner” philosophy—fostering belonging, confidence, and joy in every participant.
What You’ll Do:
As an Adapted Recreation Coach, you’ll:
- Assist and lead adapted sports and recreational activities.
- Promote positive experiences for participants with varying abilities, including Special Olympics athletes.
- Encourage sportsmanship, participation, and progress over competition.
- Build strong, respectful relationships with participants, caregivers, and families.
- Ensure a safe, inclusive, and fun environment for all.
- Collaborate closely with the Gymnastics & Adapted Recreation Director to support program goals.
- Help integrate participants into broader community-based recreation whenever possible.
What We’re Looking For
Skills & Experience:
- Experience working or volunteering in adapted recreation, coaching, or special education.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Background in YMCA philosophy and values (preferred).
- Sensitivity to individual needs and ability to build rapport with diverse participants.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt.
Professional Competencies:
- Effective verbal and written communication, both one-on-one and in group settings.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and emotional intelligence.
Certifications (preferred but not required upon hire):
- CPR/AED and First Aid (must be obtained within 60 days of hire, if not already certified).
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to observe and interact with participants through sight, sound, and active engagement.
- Must be able to move freely throughout program areas.
- Able to lift and transport equipment and supplies up to 50 lbs.
Schedule & Compensation:
- Part-time hours; schedule varies by program needs.
- Wage commensurate with experience.
- Includes free YMCA adult membership.
