Job Announcement

The Foster Care Assistant supports the Foster Care Coordinator to find, train, and support volunteer foster families to provide temporary housing for foster animals. The ideal candidate has strong organizational skills, is meticulous with details, and embodies The NOAH Center’s mission of stopping the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable, and treatable homeless dogs and cats and being committed to our family-friendly pet adoptions, humane education, volunteer programs, and high-quality spay and neuter programs. The Foster Care Assistant ensures all medical treatments for The NOAH Center's foster care animals are completed as directed by a licensed veterinary staff member or volunteer. They are responsible for providing the best care and recovery possible for all treatable and rehabilitatable animals to restore their physical and mental health to standards acceptable for adoption.

Foster Care Assistant

Purpose

The Foster Care Assistant is responsible for providing superior care and treatments to all foster care animals in need at The NOAH Center, restoring their physical and mental health to standards acceptable for adoption. This includes but is not limited to coordinating medical treatments and intake exams; working with the Transfer Coordinator to arrange regular incoming transfers of animals; referring medical concerns to the Foster Care Coordinator; recruiting and training foster volunteers/families; and administering medication and vaccines as the law permits.

Education and Experience

Must be 18 years of age
High school diploma or GED equivalent
An Associate's Degree in biological science is desired
Certified Veterinary Assistant course completion is desired
Must meet all the requirements in The NOAH Center's WSP WATCH Background Check Policy
Prior experience in an animal welfare environment or animal clinical experience is desired
Obtain a Medication Clerks License within six (6) months of start
Euthanasia certification within six (6) months of start

FLSA Classification

Non-Exempt, regular, full-time
$18-$22 per hour, DOE
Schedule varies and will include occasional weekend, holiday, and evening work
Medical and dental insurance (full-time only), paid sick leave and time off, and retirement options (once eligibility requirements are met).

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills required

  • Computer literate in Windows environment; able to maintain accurate written and electronic records of animals and volunteers

Work Environment

  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, carry, and safely lift up to 30 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Works in an area with a high noise level
  • Handles animals with possible exposure to fumes from cleaning chemicals
  • Subject to animal dander, bites, and scratches, as well as possible exposure to biological and zoonotic agents
  • Responds to emergency emails, calls, and appointments during regular business hours to support foster care families; triage and coordinate referred care with medical care teams

Tasks

  • Assists the Foster Care Coordinator with the general care and overall health of The NOAH Center's foster animals
  • Proactively communicates the needs of foster animals with the Foster Care Coordinator, including accurate and complete paperwork
  • Reviews all foster pet medical records, intake records and notes regularly for accuracy and completion
  • Works with the Transfer Coordinator and Foster Care Coordinator to assist with the transfer and transport of animals in need of foster care placement
  • Assists foster families with the physical pick-up and return of animals
  • Ensures that all foster family supplies are up-to-date and current per protocol and ready to distribute to foster families during pickup appointments
  • Provides support to foster care families in providing quality and safe animal care
  • Prepares and provides supplies for foster families and department; maintains inventory and notifies appropriate person for re-order; manages medication inventory and supplies
  • Provides guidance and direction to assist foster care families with resources about program protocols and disease prevention and any changes to the foster care program
  • Schedules health check appointments for emergency foster care situations on days when the Foster Coordinator is not available.
  • Follows all foster age medical protocols and defers to the Medical Director for any contingencies outside of current protocol
  • Implements plans for suite space; prepares foster animals as needed for surgery, including verifying medical information is up to date and complete before adoption
  • Create a positive, caring, and team-centered atmosphere
  • Oversees on-site volunteer tasks, training and scheduling within the Foster Care Office
  • Actively demonstrates an appreciative attitude toward volunteers; participates in regular volunteer recognition initiatives
  • Responsible for assisting with cleaning and disinfecting foster care exam areas, equipment, and housing promptly following The NOAH Center's cleaning guidelines. Ensures that the daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning routines are completed to standards and on time
  • Supports Development and Marketing teams by providing stories, documents, photographs, and marketing and fundraising initiatives opportunities
  • Follows all safety procedures; handles all animals humanely and safely and monitors that all volunteers and co-workers are as well.
  • Performs all procedures safely and with protective equipment; adequately posts signs, markers, and barriers, as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
