Neets Bay Assistant Hatchery Manager

The Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting for one of two full-time Assistant Hatchery Managers at the Neets Bay Hatchery, located approximately 30 air miles from Ketchikan, Alaska. The Neets Bay program includes about 140 million chum salmon and 3.5 million coho salmon. This position requires living on site in furnished, subsidized housing with utilities and amenities such as weekly mail and supply flights, satellite internet, and R&R hotel accommodations in Ketchikan. The Assistant Manager will be part of a management team that includes a site manager, maintenance supervisor, and two assistant managers, working together to ensure successful hatchery operations.

The Assistant Hatchery Manager trains and mentors staff in salmon culture techniques and procedures while supporting project planning, budgeting, data entry, and supply management. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with staff, vendors, and contractors. In the Hatchery Manager’s absence, the Assistant Manager assumes full responsibility for all operations. The role also serves as the hatchery safety officer, leading training sessions and ensuring compliance with SSRAA policies and procedures.

Applicants must have at least an associate degree in fisheries or a related field, two years of hatchery experience with supervisory responsibilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. A valid Alaska driver’s license is required, and all applicants may undergo a background check. Preferred qualifications include experience in Pacific salmon culture, maintenance skills (carpentry, welding, plumbing, electrical), and knowledge of local fisheries issues. Candidates must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs., work long hours in challenging weather, and thrive in a remote team environment.

SSRAA offers a competitive benefits package including health, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, participation in a 403(b)-retirement plan, and personal and sick leave accrual. We are seeking a motivated, safety-conscious leader who can adapt to changing conditions, problem-solve effectively, and is committed to SSRAA’s mission of enhancing salmon production for the benefit of all user groups.
