Position Summary 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. 

The Wellness Center Manager is a key leadership role responsible for the day-to-day operations, culture, and performance of the Wellness Center and its attendant, equipment maintenance, and personal training teams. This position provides clear direction, consistent supervision, and accountable leadership to ensure a safe, professional, and welcoming environment for members and staff. 

Working in close partnership with the Health & Wellness Director, the Wellness Center Manager serves as a visible leader on the floor, a collaborative thought partner in operational decision-making, and a steward of both people and equipment. This role requires confidence in leadership, comfort with accountability conversations, and the ability to balance autonomy with strategic alignment. 

 

Essential Functions 

Builds, supervises, and leads a team of Health & Wellness Attendants, Personal Trainers, and Fitness Equipment Technicians who deliver outstanding member service rooted in the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. 

Provides direct supervision, coaching, and performance oversight for assigned equipment technicians, ensuring alignment with Wellness Center priorities, safety standards, and service expectations. 

Establishes and maintains clear professional boundaries, modeling leadership behaviors and ensuring the Wellness Center Manager is recognized as a supervisor and decision-maker. 

Recruits, hires, onboards, trains, and evaluates Health & Wellness Attendants, Equipment Technicians and Personal Trainers, ensuring staff understand expectations, policies, procedures, and their role in the member experience. 

Maintains consistent floor presence, actively supervising staff performance, providing real-time coaching, and addressing concerns proactively rather than reactively. 

Holds staff accountable through clearly defined expectations, SOPs, performance documentation, and follow-through on corrective action when necessary. 

Oversees Wellness Center equipment management, including preventative maintenance planning, corrective repairs, vendor coordination, downtime tracking, and technician workflow, in collaboration with the Health & Wellness Director. 

Supervises the daily work, priorities, and accountability of equipment technicians, ensuring timely response to equipment issues and clear communication regarding repair status and timelines. 

Identifies equipment issues promptly, initiates service requests, communicates timelines clearly to leadership and staff, and follows repairs through to completion. 

Ensures all floor staff are trained on equipment safety standards, reporting procedures, and communication expectations. 

Supports long-term equipment planning by providing input on usage patterns, repair trends, and member feedback. 

Conducts regular assessments of free-weight and accessory equipment (including dumbbells, barbells, weight plates, medicine balls, kettlebells, resistance bands, and functional training tools), ensuring proper condition, safe storage, cleanliness, inventory control, and timely replacement as needed. 

Works independently with sound judgment, while maintaining open, proactive communication with the Health & Wellness Director and senior leadership. 

Seeks guidance, input, and alignment on operational decisions, demonstrating a high level of collaboration with all colleagues.  

Actively participates in department meetings, all-staff meetings, and trainings, contributing meaningfully and cascading information to the Attendant and equipment technician teams. 

Supports a culture of inclusion and belonging, ensuring the Wellness Center reflects the YMCA’s commitment to being the Most Welcoming Place on Earth. 

Assists with special events, department initiatives, and YMCA-wide programming as needed, including adjusted schedules or on-floor support to ensure successful execution. 

Establishes functional policies and makes tactical decisions, within overall strategic direction, with top management guidance. 

Solves complex problems, applying research, training, or management approaches in new ways; develops and recommends new alternatives to the Health & Wellness Director and other senior leaders. 

Obtains and maintains all required YMCA certifications and trainings. 

Works a flexible 40-hour work week, including evenings and weekends as needed for onboarding, training, meetings, and operational coverage. 

Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Health & Wellness Department and the broader mission of the YMCA. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Two-year degree in Health & Wellness, Exercise Science, Fitness, or a related field; or equivalent accumulation of trainings, workshops, certifications or learning and development in a related field. 

At least 3-½ years of experience working in a fitness, health & wellness, exercise or athletics field. 

Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or management experience, including direct oversight of staff performance, scheduling, training, and accountability. 

Previous experience managing or coordinating equipment maintenance, repairs, or facilities-related operations, including working with technicians, vendors, or service providers. 

Experience addressing employee performance issues, conflict resolution, and corrective conversations in a timely, respectful, and documented manner. 

Experience creating, implementing, and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensuring consistent follow-through by staff. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Prior experience in a YMCA or nonprofit health and wellness environment, with familiarity navigating mission-driven operations and community-centered service models. 

Experience with preventative maintenance systems, asset tracking, or equipment management software. 

Experience leading change, implementing new processes, or strengthening team culture during periods of transition. 

Bilingual or multilingual skills, with proficiency in both English and Spanish preferred, to better support staff, members, and community engagement. 

Previous experience supporting special events, department initiatives, or large-scale programming in a community or wellness setting.

Proven ability to lead teams with clear authority, maintain professional boundaries, and be recognized as a supervisor rather than a peer. 

Strong decision-making skills with the ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with senior leadership and operating within established organizational structures. 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear expectations, provide feedback, and represent the department professionally.
