Regulatory Veterinary Summer Internship Program

PDF Applications Due January 1, 2027 - Contact HR@agri.ohio.gov for details

This is a 10-week PAID summer internship hosted at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) for a current veterinary student that is interested in working in regulatory medicine. This internship is designed to prepare veterinary students for a career in regulatory/government medicine as well as to bring awareness of the different jobs and career paths that a veterinarian could have working for ODA. Being a regulatory veterinarian requires a unique skill set that is often hard to address in the classroom curriculum. This program is an opportunity to gain hands on experience within the Department of Agriculture.

During the ten weeks, you will spend time in 4 sections of ODA:

  1. The Division of Animal Health Field Operations: Assist our field veterinarians and inspectors as they participate in county fair compliance checks, livestock care standards visits, TB testing, sale barn visits, Captive Deer Farm inspections, and foreign animal disease (FAD) investigations.
  2. The Division of Meat Inspection Field Operations: Ride along with our field veterinarians as they conduct humane handling visits, routine slaughter operation evaluations, carcass dispositions, and compliance visits at state inspected slaughter facilities.
  3. The Division of Animal Health Administration: Shadow the Emergency Coordinator, Assistant State Veterinarian, and other administrators as they participate in daily work unit meetings and task forces on a variety of topics from foreign animal disease to emergency response. Assist with health paper documentation and epidemiologic questionnaires.
  4. Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Spend time in all sections of our laboratory: virology, pathology, bacteriology, molecular diagnostics, and avian serology. Learn how the different tests are conducted and the importance of these tests to our industry.

The end of the summer internship culminates in a presentation to ODA staff.
