Digital Media Manager

Population Connection seeks a Digital Media Manager to help increase awareness of the organization and to advance its mission on social media, in web searches, in the news media, and among those working on reproductive health and sustainable development initiatives. The Digital Media Manager will work with the Communications team to create and market written and visual materials that are educational, persuasive, and accessible. Population Connection is a membership-based organization — as such, acquiring and retaining members is central to our mission, as is speaking as a collective voice on behalf of our 40,000 members in our outward-facing communications.

The Digital Media Manager will be responsible for all aspects of social media management for Population Connection, with an eye toward increasing followers and engagement. The Digital Media Manager will work with others in the Communications and Marketing departments to improve SEO, website traffic, and conversions through website improvements and paid ads, with the help of an outside firm. They will be responsible for keeping the website current, regularly reviewing content and making updates as needed. Depending on writing ability, they may assist with writing blog posts, magazine articles, and press pieces. When relevant opportunities arise, the Digital Media Manager may attend large international conferences and major UN meetings.

Location: Remote; option to go to office in Washington, DC, if candidate prefers

Key responsibilities

  • Create and schedule content for Population Connection social media channels, keeping up with new developments and identifying opportunities to expand following, reach, and engagement; respond to comments and direct messages
  • Help optimize SEO and paid traffic through website improvements and Google Ads; strive to convert website visitors into supporters via membership, volunteering, and/or activism
  • Identify opportunities for other digital promotions (e.g. social media ads) and take lead on managing them
  • Monitor website and update content as needed (such as when there’s new data, statistics, policy info, and examples available)
  • Support the creation of other communications content, such as blog posts, press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, magazine articles, print materials, and conference statements
  • Maintain awareness of population-related news and research

Additional responsibilities

  • Collect and create digital content at large conferences and events, e.g. International Conference on Family Planning, UN meetings
  • Host exhibit booth at large international conferences every 1-3 years, alongside other Communications staff
  • Deliver presentations on behalf of Population Connection, typically alongside the rest of the Communications team
  • Support the Communications team’s outreach efforts (including media work, potential partnerships, etc.) as needed, and keep an eye out for additional opportunities to increase Population Connection’s visibility and advance its mission

Qualifications

  • Interest in population trends and dynamics and a commitment to population stabilization through voluntary, human-rights-based family planning access
  • Pro-choice: Candidates must support every individual’s right to determine their own pregnancy and childbearing outcomes
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. public health, ecology, environmental science, communications), plus at least three years of relevant work experience; if no degree, at least five years of relevant work experience. While this position doesn’t necessarily require a degree, it does require the ability to understand and summarize data and research.
  • Extensive experience with social media management and best practices for each unique platform
  • Good understanding of SEO and paid search
  • Ability to manage website content in WordPress, or the willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with Canva design tool
  • Ability to work independently: The Communications team works remotely, so collaboration occurs through video meetings, email, and Teams chatting. The candidate will need to be organized and self-motivated to prioritize tasks and projects, and will need to be comfortable proactively reaching out with questions or requests for help.

Travel

  • Large international conferences, not more than once per year
  • Annual staff retreat in Virginia in June

Compensation

Population Connection will provide a salary commensurate with experience, ranging from $75,000 to $90,000. Benefits include generous annual and sick leave; 18 paid holidays; low-premium Blue Cross medical and dental coverage; employer paid vision, life, and disability insurance; paid parental leave; and a 401K retirement match. A professional development budget of $2,000 a year will be provided to support continuing education.
