Nurse Assistant
Position Summary:
The Nurse Assistant supports the delivery of expert medical and health care services to campers, staff, and volunteers throughout the camp session(s). They assist with providing comprehensive medical care, managing health records, and addressing health concerns and emergencies. The Nurse Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and healthy camp environment by helping implement and monitor health protocols, supporting the Health Care Staff/Camp Nurse, and contributing to the overall wellness of the camp community.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Work under the supervision of the Camp Nurse in the Health Center, providing support and assistance in delivering medical care.
- Assess and treat minor ailments and injuries, ensuring timely and appropriate care for campers, staff, and volunteers.
- Assist in organizing and setting up the Camp Woodie Health Center to ensure it is fully prepared for medical needs.
- Ensure that First-Aid kits, over-the-counter medications, and other medical supplies are consistently stocked and well-maintained.
- Assist with maintaining camper health forms, and keep a detailed daily log of office visits and treatments for campers, staff, and volunteers.
- Help with accepting and securely storing prescription and over-the-counter medications during check-in and throughout the camp session. Ensure medications are properly returned to parents or caregivers during check-out.
- Organize and assemble supplies and equipment needed for medical check-in and check-out stations.
- Assist the Camp Nurse in organizing and administering prescription and over-the-counter medications according to campers’ Kardex and treatment plans.
- Support the orientation and guidance of Camp Woodie staff, volunteers, and nursing students, providing essential information and training.
- Contribute to managing illness and injury situations, including accident and incident reporting, assessment, and determining the appropriate medical direction of care with supervision from the Camp Nurse.
- Communicate with parents and counselors about campers’ illnesses or injuries as directed by the Camp Nurse.
- Encourage and support the physical, mental, and emotional wellness of campers, staff, and volunteers.
- Read and follow directions on health forms, physical orders, and parent letters. Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions throughout the camp.
- Evaluate medical services provided and offer feedback for improvements or additional needs to enhance overall care.
- Maintain high standards of safety and health in all activities for yourself, campers, and other staff/volunteers.
- Model professionalism and serve as a positive role model for both campers and staff. Adhere to camp procedures and practices including safety, sportsmanship, appropriate behavior, schedule adherence, and cleanliness.
- Contribute to the camp staff team in delivering and supervising evening programs, special events, overnights, all-camp activities, and camp functions.
- Ensure that Counselors-In-Training assigned to your cabin/area receive valuable and relevant experiences.
- Create a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere for campers and staff during all camp activities.
- Provide exceptional and consistent customer service to all camp guests.
- Assist campers and staff in following emergency procedures (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, etc.) as needed.
- Embrace the role with energy and enthusiasm to ensure a fun and memorable experience for all.
- Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of camp facilities and equipment.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Camp Leadership Team.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Currently certified or willing to become certified in First Aid/CPR before the summer (certification will be provided if needed).
- Successfully complete staff training prior to the start of camp.
- Observe camper behaviors, assess appropriateness, apply effective management techniques, and enforce safety and emergency procedures.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and integrity; ability to interact effectively with people at all levels.
- Take initiative, be flexible, use sound judgment, and work harmoniously with others.
- Lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
- Exhibit strong communication, organizational, and human relations skills.

Education and Experience:
- Currently working towards a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 18 years old
Physical Requirements:
- Lead and participate in recreational activities which may include running, throwing, kicking & shooting
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental weather and program threats, as well as maintaining constant supervision of campers, staff, and volunteers
- Ability to lift and/or maneuver weights of up to 35lbs
- Physical ability to respond to emergency situations and follow procedures.
- Endurance including: prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching
- Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities
- Requires daily exposure to the sun, heat, insect and animals
