Youth Specialist Job Description (B.O.S.S. Program) 

 

Job Title: Youth Specialist  

Location: Memphis Office of Youth Services  

Minimum Qualifications:  

Youth Specialists will assist in the implementation and facilitation of program-related activities at designated community centers or schools within their city district. 

Must have a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or any degree related, or at least 55 college semester hours. It’s also possible for candidates to work as they pursue their education through part-time study or have at least one or two years of experience working with vulnerable populations, whether voluntary or paid. The individual must present to have a passion for contributing to change in the community and working with at-risk youth.  

Summary of Position:  

This position includes, but is not limited to, conducting group sessions, maintaining attendance and program-related records, and assisting with service project ideas. 

Candidates must have a great understanding of the issues that affect the lives of the youth, a commitment to helping young people, and an understanding of civic and social justice issues. 

Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule, which consists of full-time hours in the summer and part-time hours during the school year (2-6 pm Monday-Thursday, 1-5 pm or 9 am-1 pm on Friday, and occasional special events). 

 

Program Responsibilities:  

 

  • Serve as lead facilitator for implementation of the Building Out Successful Students Program (BOSS) at designated sites 
  •  Be a positive leader, and mentor for students 
  • Assist in planning, marketing, and executing the social, cultural, educational, and recreational programs based on the student’s needs and/or interests and encourage students to participate in those programs 
  • Function as an advocate for students by recognizing the problems, concerns, and opinions of individuals and presenting the student’s viewpoints to the appropriate program staff 
  • Be a liaison to a neighborhood community organization on behalf of the  student liaison program 
  • Be a resource for others living in the neighborhood 
  • Maintain and update local resources for students and families  
  • Engage students to meet personal goals and objectives 
  • Implement strategies for working with communities and neighborhoods 
  • Plan social and community service events to enrich the student experience 
  • Maintain records and other program information for evaluation purposes
