Engineering Technician II

The City of Minneapolis Engineering Technician IIs perform paraprofessional civil engineering work and other related duties in the field and office.
There are currently three (3) vacancies in the following Public Works divisions:

SURFACE WATER & SEWERS - Operations Group (two positions)
 This position will be responsible for conducting complex technical work related to the construction, inspection, and maintenance of sanitary sewer and storm drain infrastructure. Primary tasks may include, but are not limited to construction inspection, infrastructure assessments, maintaining accurate records, communication with contractor, and organizing project documents.
 
 Work Location: Hiawatha Maintenance Facility, 1901 E 26th Street
 Work hours are from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. 
 Combination of office and field work.  Expect working outdoors in all weather conditions.

SURFACE WATER & SEWERS - Design Group (one position)
This position will be responsible for performing complex technical computer-aided design (CAD) work in connection with engineering project work for the Division. Primary tasks may include plan development using Bentley CAD products, preparation of spreadsheets for cost estimates and tabulations, and preparation of record drawing documents. Secondary tasks may include working with Geographic Information System (GIS) and stormwater modeling applications such as HydroCAD, EPA SWMM, PCSWMM, or XPSWMM.
 
 Work Location: Public Service Center, 250 S 4th Street, Room 300
 Primarily office work with possible hybrid work arrangements

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Make complex tabulations and computations in connection with engineering project work and costs, including arithmetic, and trigonometry.

• Investigate complaints regarding City owned structures or property and make recommendations to higher level staff regarding a course of action.

• Perform computer aided or manual civil engineering drafting and design work.

• Prepare and review detailed plans, estimates, and draft specifications, plats, etc., from sketches, drawings, field notes, etc., using computer-based design packages.

• Update and maintain records for engineering division assigned to, both manual and computer based.

• Perform field investigation work including assessing city sewer infrastructure, researching City facilities, inspecting work of contractors, etc.

• Perform field survey work, performing property, monument and preliminary and construction surveys, including use of rod and chain and automated survey equipment.

• Assist in the preparation of reports and related technical correspondence.

• Train and give work direction to Engineering Technicians I.

• Perform other duties as assigned

 

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Eighteen months training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent
 
Minimum Experience:
Two years of experience performing similar duties
 
Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
 
Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Driver's License

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience 100.00. It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions.  Only those candidates who attain a passing score 70.00 on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
  


Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
 


Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made.  Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing.  Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.  This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title.  This eligible list will expire one month after it has been established.


 
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list.  If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Good knowledge of civil engineering drafting and design, and related computer software packages.
• Ability to perform civil engineering survey work.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
• Some positions require the ability to perform modern civil engineering survey work.
• Some positions require the ability to work in confined spaces and high elevations.
