Duties

Selectees will work in a Wilderness Information Center at Longmire or White River (Enumclaw) in Mount Rainier National Park. Selectees will perform duties related to wilderness and resource education and protection, hiker and climber safety, and visitor assistance and education. Important duties include:

  • Provide information, assist with trip itinerary planning, and educate visitors about the principles of the "Leave No Trace' ethic. Issue climbing and wilderness camping permits. Work to resolve conflicts with trip itineraries in order to assure maximum resource protection. Wilderness Information Center duties require extended periods of standing and sitting.
  • Receive telephone, email, and in-person requests for advanced reservations from the general public and commercial use authorization holders. Enter information into a permit system database, prepare confirmation letters, and issue wilderness permits.
  • Conduct wilderness patrols to assess conditions and assist visitors in the backcountry. Navigate using map and compass. Use minimum impact hiking and camping techniques. Patrol in steep terrain and adverse weather conditions carrying a backpack weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May serve as a member of an in-park Incident Management Team or be called upon to provide emergency services such as medical, search and rescue, and wildland fire within the scope of training and certifications.

Government housing may be available.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Mount Rainier National Park is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025.
