Public Health is a Division of the New Mexico Department of Health. The Northwest Region Public Health Division consists of 7 counties with multiple public health offices. Each office houses diverse staff members offering services promoting healthy behaviors to have a better quality of life.
Why does the job exist?
To provide public health education in the Northwest Region on Emergency Preparedness programs ensuring compliance with federal and state planning guidelines and regulations. Incumbent will plan, implement and facilitate training for community groups, review and revise drills and exercises and assist in the development of materials for emergency plans. This position will focus on medical and hospital services, bio-terrorism and will coordinate with emergency managers, first responders, volunteer groups, municipalities and regional and state organizations.
How does it get done?
Providing in-depth training and education on emergency preparedness to the public and entities within the Northwest Region. Develop and deliver advanced emergency preparedness training programs for various audiences, such as emergency response teams, healthcare professionals, and community groups. Provide guidance and support to individuals and organizations during emergencies and disasters, including facilitating drills and exercises to test preparedness plans. Develop, revise and perform ongoing planning and maintenance of public health and health system emergency operation plans; ensure consistency with the DOH Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and State All Hazard Emergency Operations Plan. Participate in the development and promote efforts of the Emergency Healthcare System, including pandemic and all hazard planning, exercise and related activities in accordance with Federal Emergency Preparedness programs.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has experience:
- Communicating between different program areas.
- Coordinating activities with partners in and out of public health.
- Working alone as a one-person team with support from other programs when available.
- Collaborating between programs in the local region, State offices, community organizations, and providers.
- Maintaining workflow within program.
-performing high-level functions in Emergency Management; functions as the technical expert in public health emergency
response, requiring high level functionality in problem solving and accountability.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Education and two (2) years of experience in a health related field. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Services are provided in office, auxiliary and community site settings throughout the Northwest Public Health Region. Position will coordinate with local emergency managers, first responders, volunteer groups, municipalities, and regional and state organizations. Exposure to Visual Nideo Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds may be required. Potential exposure to communicable diseases. Travel to clinics to provide outreach and coverage, for training and to attend meetings with the occasional overnight stay will be required.
