Design Engineer
SW Bridge Engineers, LLC is an engineering design firm focused on railroad bridge design, inspection and analysis. Our engineers understand the challenges associated with maintaining and reconstructing in service railroad bridges and work to develop creative and cost-effective solutions. Our clients are railroads, primarily located in the Midwestern states and across the United States.
The Design Engineer is a structural engineering position suited for an individual who is enthusiastic about working on railroad bridges outdoors in all weather conditions as well as in an office setting. Projects are almost entirely railroad bridge projects involving bridge design, structural inspections, bridge load ratings, and design of temporary structures for bridge construction. This position also involves estimating and determining the appropriate methods and costs associated with completing a project. Safety and Quality will always take precedence in this position. The first six months to one year will be spent in training which will consist more heavily of hands-on work in the field. This is required in order for the Design Engineer to acquire an understanding of the unique work that the company performs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
· Assist clients with management of their bridges, using sound engineering practice as well as knowledge of Federal requirements.
· Design Projects: bridge replacement, bridge repairs, temporary structures for construction such as scaffolding or jacking systems
· Site Visits to bridges to develop scope of work, gather bridge inventory data, measure and/or survey structure.
· Permitting work associated with the projects
· Construction related engineering
· Bridge Inspections: coordinating, planning and performing annual bridge inspections, detailed inspections using rail mounted aerial access equipment or manlift, making repair recommendations, creating or updating inspection reports
· Railroad Bridge Engineering: Load ratings for various bridges including timber, concrete and steel bridges, conditional ratings for steel bridges accounting for section loss or damage, equipment ratings for special High/Wide rail shipments
Frequent Requirements
· Travel to field project sites throughout the United States. Average 2 - 3 overnight stays per month.
· Coordination of railroad On track Safety and access bridges by hyrail truck.
· Work in the Field Time to Office Time ranges from 25/75 to 50/50 and fluctuates seasonally
· Typical Office days are based on 8AM to 5PM and some work from home allowed to provide flexibility and balance.
· Typical Field days often begin in early morning and can extend into late evening at times
· Stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 75 pounds occasionally while performing specific duties
· Work outdoors in all weather conditions, often in thick vegetation, submerged or wet ground, or at great heights
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Work requires a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Emphasis is preferred
· A minimum of two years previous experience or extensive summer and co-op work experience
· Software used: RISA 2D & 3D, AutoCAD, MS Office, Smath Studio
· Experience in concrete, steel and timber design preferred
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Experience in construction and railroad operations
· Experience in surveying
· Bridge Inspection experience a plus
