The Position

The East Bay Regional Park District is a system of beautiful parklands, trails, rolling hills, shorelines, and lakes located throughout Alameda and Contra Costa County. We're hiring skilled and passionate Recreation Leaders to help with Day Camp and Overnight Camping programs for public and private groups. We're seeking individuals who have prior experience working with youth and families as well as solid teaching or presentation skills. These are seasonal positions, paid by the hour with no benefits. Work hours are flexible and a variety of weekday and weekend shifts are available. Recreation Leaders are hired into levels I-IV depending on experience. Hourly Pay Rates:

 

Recreation Leader I - $17.22 - $18.13

 

Recreation Leader II - $20.88 - $21.97

 

Recreation Leader III - $24.02 - $25.27

 

Recreation Leader IV - $30.00 - $31.59

 

Mandatory Training Dates:

 

Day Camp Staff training:

 

June 3 - June 6, 2025

 

General Staff Training: April 30 or May 28, 2025

 

Overnight Camping training:

May 29 - May 30, 2025

General Staff Training: April 30 or May 28, 2025

First Aid/CPR Training (required for all Recreation Leader positions): Candidates can attend the Park District's training tentatively set for June 2, 2025. Alternatively, applicants can also provide proof of training completion within 30 days of employment.

 

Essential Functions


 

Recreation Leader I

Under supervision, assists in a variety of outdoor recreational activities and assignments in support of Day camp and overnight camping, as well as other District programs. Provides input for record keeping and performs other work as required. Recreation Leader II

Under general supervision, leads and participates in a variety of outdoor recreational activities and assignments in support of Day camp and overnight camping programs, as well as other District programs and performs record keeping and other work as required. Recreation Leader III

Under general supervision, leads, supervises and participates in a variety of outdoor recreational activities and assignments in support of Day camp and overnight camping programs, as well as other District programs. Performs record keeping and other work as required. Recreation Leader IV

Under general supervision, serves as program lead for a variety of outdoor recreational activities and assignments in support of Day camp and overnight camping programs, as well as other District programs. Recreation Leader IV is the journey level position in this series, with principal duties as the program lead, and overall supervision of recreation program participants and seasonal staff. Minimum Qualifications


 

Recreation Leader I:Education: Must be 16 years of age or older, and must be in attendance at, or on legitimate leave from, a high school, trade school, or college or university. College coursework, bilingual, or multi-lingual skills are preferred.

Recreation Leader II: In addition to the above:Experience: Must have completed at least one season of recent experience comparable to a Recreation Leader I with East Bay Regional Park District.

 

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver's License as a condition of initial and continued employment; Must obtain Basic First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of initial job offer.

Recreation Leader III: In addition to the above:Experience: Must have completed at least one season of recent experience comparable to a Recreation Leader II with East Bay Regional Park District.

Recreation Leader IV: In addition to the above:Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

 

Experience: Must have completed at least one season of recent experience comparable to a Recreation Leader III with East Bay Regional Park District.

 

Additional Information


 

Conditions of Employment (applicable to all levels):

 

• Must pass a Level 1 background screening which includes DOJ fingerprinting and criminal history review and subject to tuberculosis (TB) clearance.

• Required to wear a Park District uniform.

• May be required to work unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.

• Must be able to stand, walk, twist, bend, reach above and below shoulders, lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and depending upon assignment, may be required to swim, ride a bike, hike, kayak, canoe, or perform other applicable physical duties.

• This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter under the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA). Mandated reporters are individuals who are obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. As such, you will be required to sign an acknowledgment of having received the District's policy and your responsibilities.
