Job Description

Salary Range: $4,000-$4,500 per season; DOQ
Reports To: Manager of Recreation & facilities
Function/Nature of Work:
Under general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Head Swim Team Coach is responsible for conducting a competitive swim team program that teaches the correct stroke techniques and prepares participants for competitive swim meets.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Coaching experience preferred.
- Must be available and flexible to work various hours during the week and weekend.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to plan and lead aquatic activities for children at assigned age level.
- Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
- Ability to handle stressful situations, have good problem-solving skills and practice positive customer service.
- Ability to follow directions from supervisor and coworkers; ability to give direction to co-workers in a respectful manner.
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Essential Functions:
- Coaches and attends all scheduled team workouts.
- Oversees the team coaches and aides to provide knowledge and expertise.
- Completes swim meet entries and oversees swim meet entries completed by assistants.
- Responsible for the setup of swim meets, including swim meet information, computer entries, heat sheets, swim meet operation and results.
- Ensure the safety of team members. Develop safety rules and guidelines with the swim team.
- Works with team parents to coordinate team and meet responsibilities.
- Project a positive and professional image to parents and the public.
- Respond quickly and efficiently to all emergency situations.
- Mobilize support of the team through recruitment of volunteers and soliciting donations of equipment and supplies.
- Performs related work as required and as directed.
- Practice exceptional public relations that promote a positive image of the Park District.
- Exhibit and encourage CHARACTER COUNTS! in the workplace and District programs and facilities.
- Actively support the safety program and related programs including following/enforcing safety rules, reporting accidents and injuries, and developing ideas for the prevention of future incidents.
- Develop and coordinate assigned special events.
Marginal Functions/Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to organize and cooperate with people of all ages.
- Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures. Will be required to be lifeguard certified through Starfish Aquatics. Training is provided.
- Attend swim team social functions.
- Need to be able to communicate through email.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to enforce pool regulations in a firm manner while maintaining good public relations.
- Knowledge or the ability to learn and use Swim Team Manager to be able to line up swimmers.
Working Hours and Compensation:
The position of Head Swim Team Coach is a summer seasonal only position and is paid every two weeks at an agreed salary between $4,000-$4,500 per season, DOQ. The position is classified as a non-exempt hourly employee status and will work a various number of hours per week. Physiological Considerations
The Coach must expect to work extended periods of time on his/her feet and lifting or moving supplies and equipment.
Environmental Considerations
The Coach may be exposed to outdoor elements while supervising activities. Prolonged hours with exposure to sun, heat, rain, snow, or other natural elements should be expected. When involved with programs that are held indoors, the Coach may be exposed to conditionals such as lighting and temperature.
Cognitive Considerations
The Coach must possess both the ability to carry out instructions given by his/her supervisor and think quickly and take decisive actions on his/her own. The Coach must have the ability to present ideas and recommendations in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing. The Coach must exhibit good problem-solving skills and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Park District.
