Code Enforcement Officer
The Code Compliance division in the Economic Development & Planning Department is seeking Code Enforcement Officers that would love to join their professional team. This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking to use their knowledge of laws, regulations, and ordinances regulating housing, building standards, and uses of land. It also provides the opportunity for anyone to build upon their construction experience, methods, and processes of similar trades. This position ensures that properties within the City of Lansing housing and zoning are in compliance with the City's ordinances.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING:
- Must possess an ICC Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector certification and ICC International Zoning Inspector certification OR obtain both certifications within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:
- High School Diploma or GED, plus six (6) months of training beyond High School (Associate Degree in Building Trades, Construction Management, Planning or a related field preferred); AND
- Three (3) years of experience in the field of Planning or Residential Construction, building trades, and/or code enforcement.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Basic computer skills required- must be able to use a lap top computer in a mobile environment.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Aims to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Lansing residents through the preservation and improvement of the housing stock by assuring safe, decent, and sanitary housing while conserving the integrity of Lansing neighborhoods.
- Inspects and re-inspects properties to ensure compliance with the City's housing and zoning ordinances.
- Provides general information to the public verbally and in writing as a result of conducting inspections to ensure enforcement of regulations and ordinances regarding zoning of property and zoning application procedures.
- Investigates housing conditions relating to trash, rubbish, weeds, and disabled motor vehicles, by observing and interpreting information.
- Monitors long term placard properties to ensure they remain unoccupied, secure, and free of violations; NEAT (Neighborhood Enhancement Action Team)
- Prepares inspection reports and certifications and licenses.
- Attends neighborhood group meetings/summits to inform neighborhood groups of problems in area and explains what standards will and will not allow. Also attends educational events and Ingham County Land Bank auctions to educate the public, provide informative resources, address inquiries, and provide valuable insights.
- Issues violation and correction notices for code conformance.
- Testifies in court; works closely with the Office of the City Attorney to prepare legal documents and evidence for court proceedings
