Camp Counselor and Activity Leader

Position: Camp Counselor & Activity Leader
Reports to: Assistant Camp Director
Salary: $450/week


Camp Goals
To provide an opportunity for young people to experience the outdoors and connect with the natural world, learn skills, build self-esteem and practice developing constructive social relationships in a safe healthy environment.

● Training and experience in recreation activities.
● Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.
● Understand the development needs of youth.
● Ability to relate to one’s peer group and youth in a positive manner.
● Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
● Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
● Ability to design and coordinate a varied program designed for camp.
● Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
● Must be able to pass a pre-employment fingerprint and background test.
● Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
● High school graduate or equivalent and 18 years of age.


Certifications / Licenses
● First Aid & CPR


Specific Responsibilities
● Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their living unit,
within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
● Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through
communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and
empowerment of youth.
● Be aware of and implement safety guidelines and assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
● Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers
within the mission and outcomes of Camp Natoma.
● Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff,
including providing for the daily care of each camper and the recognition of their
personal health needs.
● Actively participate in staff meetings.
● Teach or lead program activities.
● Be a role model and set a good example for campers and staff including cleanliness,
punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.
● Follow all camp rules.
● Encourage respect for personal property and camp facilities and report repair needs
promptly.
● Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy.
● Maintain good public relations with camper’s parents.
● These are not the only duties to be performed. Some may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
 

Essential Functions
1. Ability to communicate and work with groups, and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
2. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
3. Understand the philosophy and objectives of Camp Natoma, and be able to pass this knowledge on to others.
4. Ability to: observe camper behavior; assess it for appropriateness; enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures; and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
5. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
6. Ability to adapt to rough terrain, heat, and living outdoors.
