Teaching Associate

Position Summary:

Teaching Associates work closely with Instructors to bring Pre-College classes to life.  While their roles vary from class to class, they are often tasked with running certain class activities, facilitating small group discussions, leading small groups during excursions, and supervising students during transitions throughout the day. Although Duke Pre-College Program participants are required to meet language proficiency guidelines, Teaching Associates who speak different languages are expected to assist international participants in fully comprehending the material when necessary. Students will be from grades 9-11 and may have varying prerequisite knowledge and aptitude. TAs assist students to ensure all students are academically challenged everyday while also receiving academic support.

*Although Teaching Associates are required to maintain a highly visible presence while on campus, they are not required to live on campus but may opt to do so. 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework in the content area in the course for which they are applying, though a bachelor’s degree is preferable; classroom experience with middle and/or high school students; effective communication and interpersonal skills; experience using Zoom and learning management systems such as Canvas and will be able to provide support and assistance to program participants. Ability to speak another language is preferred but not required.

 

General Expectations:

  • Maintain the highest level of attention to risk management and safety for staff and students.
  • Understand and adhere to FERPA, HIPPA, TITLE IX, and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Possess cultural sensitivity awareness and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Work with the Duke Pre-College administrative staff.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of all student and staff materials having reviewed and learned these prior to the start of the program.
  • Be active on campus during Duke Pre-College summer programs dates and maintain high visibility and availability for the duration of the program for risk management purposes.
  • Lead, guide, and support students and staff and set the tone of the site through a consistent, positive, interpersonal style while performing job duties.
  • Remain committed to working as a team player and have the ability to work independently when appropriate.
  • Uphold all Duke University policies as applied to the Duke Pre-College Summer Programs.
  • Understand that this position is a full-time commitment, such that having another job or taking a class during the contracted period is prohibited.
  • Perform additional duties as deemed necessary by Main Office and administrative staff.

Specific Duties:

  • Work in unison with and receive mentorship from the Academic Coordinators, Academic Program Assistants, and Instructors.
  • Work with Instructors to assist and support students.
  • Participate in Zoom and Canvas training sessions as needed.
  • Supervise students during transitions.
  • Attend all instructional training sessions.
  • Assist with all field trips organized by program.
  • Monitor students’ progress through the course.
  • Assist the academic team in inventorying and storing all academic supplies at the end of the program.

Additional Requirements:

  • Should driving be required, provide documentation of a clean driving record from the last three years and be comfortable driving Duke University vehicles.
  • Agree not to consume alcoholic beverages on Duke University’s campus, nor be on campus in an inebriated state.
  • Successfully pass the Duke University criminal background check and online training for working with minors.
  • Agree to adhere to all duties before, during, and after the program as outlined in the staff materials.

Dates and Compensation:

Salary term: June 16 – July 25, 2025

(may be employed for the duration of one or more sessions)

  • Two-week residential course = $1,700
  • Two-week online course = $850 (per session)
  • One-week Lab Week course = $850

*Meals and activities fees are included, as well as housing as needed.
