Maintenance Worker
The Maintenance Worker in Public Works is responsible for a variety of skilled labor tasks to maintain county roads, parks, facilities, and public infrastructure. This includes performing snow and ice control, equipment operation, road maintenance, right-of-way inspections, and facility repairs. Workers may operate light and heavy machinery, conduct pre-trip inspections, maintain activity logs, and perform routine maintenance on public infrastructure. Within the highway division, responsibilities extend to repairing bituminous and concrete surfaces and ensuring traffic control measures are properly implemented. In parks and fairgrounds, duties include cleaning, setting up for events, and groundskeeping.
This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Candidates must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and the ability to obtain both a tanker endorsement within six months and a forklift certification within one year of hire. OSHA and safety training are also required. The role demands significant physical ability, including lifting up to 100 pounds, operating complex equipment, and working in varied weather and environmental conditions.
Daily responsibilities include collaboration with County departments and members of the public. Workers must be capable of early morning starts, long shifts, and emergency response availability. The ability to exercise sound judgment, adhere to safety standards, and perform technical maintenance tasks is essential for success in this position. While not primarily a supervisory role, the position may involve overseeing seasonal employees or directing small work crews when needed.
