Staff Air Pollution Specialist

This position can be located in Sacramento or Riverside County.

If your answer is yes, then come join the Office of Racial Equity (ORE) as the Staff Air Pollution Specialist (SAPS).

 

The ORE works at all levels within the organization and externally to meaningfully engage and address environmental injustices in the achievement of its mission. ORE serves as a catalyst and resource for CARB to become an anti-racist organization. ORE ensures CARB promotes equity in the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures. ORE's priorities are informed by the Board, executive leadership, and meaningful engagement with community members and community-based organizations, particularly those disproportionately impacted by poor air quality. To achieve its goals, ORE partners with other federal, state, and local agencies as well as ensures collaboration across CARB so the most disadvantaged communities benefit equitably from CARB programs.

 

ORE is seeking an engaging, creative, and enthusiastic SAPS who as the lead will further the development, implementation, and application of the equity tools including the racial equity lens and the community engagement model, build relationships both internally and externally, draft recommendations, and mentor staff in a fast-paced, high-profile, and collaborative environment. We're looking for a candidate who can lead and coordinate efforts on a number of high profile projects such as: a) finalizing the development of a racial equity lens, following through on the application of this tool to policy, overseeing the creation and delivering trainings for CARB staff to create an understanding of the tools; b) developing and implementing strategic plans, playing a critical role in decision-making and communication c) working with a team for develop a variety of tools build accountability and generate reports; d) supporting agency-wide community engagement efforts, including the implementation of the community engagement model.

 

The most successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of tools and concepts as it relates to equity and community engagement, as well as experience with all of the following areas: community outreach; relationship building; environmental justice; racial equity, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). The ideal candidate will also possess project management experience, demonstrate a collaborative approach, excel in creative problem-solving, and have exceptional communication skills

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

Beginning July 1st, 2025, per Executive Order N-22-25, CARB employees will be required to report into office four days a week.

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

  • Position located in a high-rise building.
  • Requires being in a stationary position, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)  
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Travel may be required, as needed
