Overview

The electronic Technical Reference Manual (eTRM) is California's central database for energy efficiency measures, used by utilities and regulators. Built on AWS using Django and Python, the eTRM follows an Agile-Scrum development approach and receives input from multiple client organizations to guide enhancements

Future Energy Enterprises (FutEE) is seeking a Software Development Lead to take over strategic and operational responsibility for this platform, while building FutEE’s internal software development function. This function should be GenAI-native, leveraging cutting-edge AI tools to accelerate development cycles and create high-quality outputs. This role will oversee an existing software development vendor and lead the transition to a high-performing internal development team.

Responsibilities: 

• Team Leadership: Build and lead an internal development team (2-5 developers). Drive the transition from a legacy vendor, including hiring, onboarding, and building a GenAI-native development culture with integrated AI tooling throughout the development lifecycle.
• Technical Development & Oversight: Define client requirements, create technical specifications, oversee development (internal & external), manage the development environment, implement best practices, and ensure code quality (including automated testing), drive research, development and integration of next generation SDLC technology, tooling and processes.
• Project Management: Manage project schedules, budgets, vendor contracts, and reporting on performance metrics. Ensure compliance (SOC 2) and maintain documentation. Support user training.
• AI Integration: Identify and implement opportunities to integrate LLMs and AI capabilities into the team’s playbook and the eTRM platform to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably software, mechanical or EECS.
• 10+ years experience in software development with at least 3+ years in direct management. 
• Demonstrated experience using GenAI tools for software development and team leadership.
• Proven experience leading software development in complex organizations.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications 

• Proficiency in Python with Django framework, AWS cloud services (S3, SES, CloudFormation, IaC), REST APIs, microservice architectures, and MySQL/PostgreSQL databases.
• Experience implementing AI/ML solutions or LLM integrations in production environments.
• Experience with SOC 2 development environments.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
• Strong team player with a solution-oriented approach.

Location:  

Role is located in Chicago, IL or Berkeley, CA

Compensation: 

The base salary range for this full-time position is $200,000.00 + benefits + 15% bonus
