Environmental Scientist
Help shape the circular economy and materials management policies of the future through sound research, innovative analyses and effective collaboration with stakeholders to enable CalRecycle’s Policy Office to function as CalRecycle’s policy analysis & development nexus, data gathering arm, and technical information clearinghouse.
The Policy Office needs scientists who are creative problem solvers and big picture thinkers. This position will include some or all of the following: asking good questions, identifying research opportunities, and developing ways to fill data needs; gathering data and conducting internet, phone and field research; analyzing complex qualitative and quantitative data; making findings and drawing conclusions based on sound science; explaining complex data, findings and ideas clearly, correctly and simply; moving between small details and the big picture to ensure research is relevant and useful for supporting policy decisions; developing options, making recommendations, and influencing decisions; communicating effectively and persuasively with a variety of audiences orally and in technical reports and research papers; taking the initiative and moving projects forward; and working on challenging environmental issues to help California move towards a circular economy.
This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense. Beginning July 1, 2025, employees are expected to report to the office at least four days per week.
