RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the performance of Power Systems Applications on the Energy Management System (EMS) and Training Simulator.   
    • This software-based platform monitors power system assets, allows for physical control of those assets, and processes power system data for real-time decision making by operations personal. 
    • This application is one of the critical tools supporting the reliability of the electric system.   
  • Maintain and update the real time node-breaker oriented power system models for the internal EMS and for Minnesota Powers’ portion of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) real-time EMS model.
  • Evaluate performance of base case power flow solution to reduce and eliminate errors and deficiencies.  
  • Review state estimator and contingency analysis for completeness and reasonability to ensure reliability under all potential scenarios.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable NERC Reliability Standards and provide evidence of compliance.
  • Coordinate data for ICCP data exchange with MISO and develops external equivalent models for systems outside of MP.
  • Serve as training resource in area(s) of expertise.
  • Develop engineering standards balancing corporate and customer needs.
  • Provide engineering expertise for internal and external customers including operators, IT, management, and others.
     

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent is required.
    • Candidates completing their degree by June 30, 2025 will be considered.
    • Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
    • An emphasis in power systems is preferred.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • No experience required. 
    • Utility engineering intern experience is desired.
       

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • These positions may be considered for a hybrid work arrangement based on ALLETE’s needs. A Hybrid work arrangement means the employee's position will be a blend of work performed both in-person and at an offsite location such as an employee's home office. This position will report regularly in person to Duluth, MN.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.


BENEFITS:

  • The expected annual compensation range for these positions is $65,000 – $82,000. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions. Additionally, this position qualifies for a comprehensive benefits package, including an Incentive Program, Retirement Benefits, Medical, Dental & Vision Plans, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Account, Life Insurance, Disability, Tuition Reimbursement, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences, and more.
